the Spirit film coming soon (2009)

So Frank Miller, instead of concentrating on making a decent go of writing All Star Batman and Robin the Boy Wonder has been getting his fingers dipped in celluloid. Since wetting his whistle with Sin City, and with Sin City 2/3 in production, he's been busying himself adapting Will Eisner's brilliant The Spirit comic into a film.

Rookie cop Denny Colt (Gabriel Macht) is killed in the line of duty but he soon returns from the grave as The Spirit, a hero whose personal mission is to fight against Central City's forces of evil and the implacable crime kingpin known as The Octopus (Samuel L Jackson).

Having emphatically made his mark in the world of comic books, the legend that is Frank Miller has now turned his attention to pictures of the moving kind with The Spirit. An adaptation of Will Eisner's revered strip, Miller has seemingly taken a few tips from his own back catalogue to present a noir-ish tale of death, resurrection and revenge. It may be a few months until we finally see The Spirit in his full, unfettered glory but in the meantime, check out the trailer:

Using the same styles employed in Sin City, with glossy black and white, drawn backgrounds and cartoonish violence, this is another pulpy gritty noirish comic book brought to life. And with The Watchmen out next year too, it's gonna be a great year for non-Marvel/DC comic book action flicks.
